The Sumatra is an absolutely stunning ornamental game bird. They are extremely hard to find, and unfortunately not many people raise them. They are listed as a threatened breed and are on the conservation list. They are extremely intelligent, curious, hardy, but poor egg layers. They lay small white/cream colored eggs, usually seasonally in spring/summer. This can make hatching and raising them quite challenging. In my opinion they far surpass the beauty of an Ayam Cemani (another black chicken breed that is becoming popular). The main difference between the two is that Sumatras are NOT fibromelanistic like the Ayam Cemani is. Sumatras do have higher levels of melanin and have extended black genes that cause their darker black to purple pea combs and skin coloration, this is different than fibromelanosis.

I wanted to talk about hatching eggs for a moment and make sure that everyone is aware of the risk involved!! One of the things that I have learned from shipping and purchasing hatching eggs myself, is that it is a gamble every time!! I just want everyone to know and understand that I have absolutely no control over the eggs once they leave my hands! The way I package my eggs, I guarantee that they will arrive in one piece. If the eggs arrive intact, that says to me that I have fulfilled my duty to my customers. I have no control over whether the eggs get x-rayed, dropped, shaken, exposed to extreme temperatures or what have you along the way. Many of these hazards will deem the eggs unhatchable. The incubation process, which we all know, can go wrong even when we think we have done everything right. I cannot be there to monitor the incubation through the 21-day period. There are way too many variables that go into producing a healthy chick from a shipped egg, and that it is certainly a huge gamble! A gamble many of us breeders and fellow chicken lovers are willing to take to get the birds or genetics we truly want. When I hatch these eggs here at our Farm we consistently get a 90-99% hatch rate. A good shipped hatching egg rate is anywhere from 0-100%. It is also important to note that I regularly check fertility in my breeding pens to ensure hatchability. I will not ship eggs from pens with less than 90% fertility. I also only ship eggs 3 days old or fresher. You CANNOT tell if an egg is fertilized or not after incubation due to destruction of the blastoderm by the incubation process. There is nothing more I can do to ensure the best hatch rate possible except to offer my assistance via Facebook messenger all the way through and I am happy to do so!! I always recommend that you allow the eggs to rest pointy end down for 24 hours before setting them. The recommended temperature is 99.5 for most chicken eggs. Humidity is recommended at 40-50% during incubation then the last 3 days increase to 60-65% until hatch. Every incubator is different, please make sure you are testing your incubator and checking for accuracy and discrepancies following your specific incubators instructions BEFORE setting your precious eggs. I HIGHLY recommend using a separate hygrometer inside your incubator to test accuracy. Also, the first few days of development are crucial on the embryos, so I recommend waiting until at least day 10 before the first candle. If you have never hatched eggs before, I highly recommend finding some local eggs to practice with first and to test out your incubator. Even experienced hatchers see hatching shipped eggs as a challenge.
Please do not purchase hatching eggs unless you are willing to accept these risk factors. And please don’t base your reviews of my Farm on your hatch rates. If you are not willing to “risk it” on shipped hatching eggs, then please do not order.
