Question 4

How do I know your birds are healthy?

We are NPIP certified and AI clean. This means we routinely have a NPIP representative come to our farm and collect samples from our birds to ensure the health of our flock. We also do not bring in outside live birds. When we have done so in the past they were strictly quarantined for several weeks before integration. If we add to our flocks now it is via hatching eggs. We also strictly enforce biosecurity here at our farm. No one handles or goes near our flocks other than us. Due to this practice, we do not allow pickups at our farm but are happy to meet locally. Why did you change your name from Scarlet Ridge Farm to Hummingbird Ridge Farm?

June 26, 2025, I lost my mother to colon cancer after a tenacious 5-year battle. She was the most loving, compassionate, selfless, authentic, and beautiful soul I have even known. My mother is who helped shape me into who I am today. My homesteading dreams would not be possible without her love, encouragement, and support.  My original name "Scarlet Ridge Farm", I came up with because my childhood dream was to run a farm somewhere in the mountains where I could watch the scarlet sunsets over the mountain ridges. After the heart shattering loss of my mother, I wanted to honor her legacy by combining my farm name with something very symbolic to her. Hummingbirds were always very meaningful to us. She used to always tell me, "I'll be with you in the sunsets and hummingbirds that come to see you".  That she has done. Since her passing, I have random hummingbirds I have never seen before following me outside every morning. So, I changed our name to forever honor her memory in everything we do here on the farm.

What is SOP and do you guarantee SOP birds from chicks and eggs?

This is a great question! SOP refers to the American Poultry Association (APA) Standard of Perfection (SOP). Each breed has outlined traits listed there that are referred to as breed standard. I work very hard here keeping only my best offspring each year to breed forward and am constantly working on getting as close as possible to each breed and varieties SOP. Breeding this way is a long-term commitment. It requires researching genetics, trial and error, TIME (years lol), investment, multiple breeding pens, and patience. Genetics are so complex and diverse. A lot of breeding is trial and error. You could pair two near perfect birds and end up with mediocre offspring because the genetics just didn’t lineup from those two birds. You could also breed two decent birds with some flaws that complement each other and end up with near perfect offspring. After working on your line for a few generations and finding who compliments who, you will start to end up with more predictable traits in your offspring. You should also be aware of this if you plan to add a new bloodline to your flock. As this can bring up some new flaws or improvements in the next generation. You must continue to breed forward with the best birds you have available to continuously improve your line. There is absolutely nothing wrong with working with what you have to get to where you want to be. Use what you have and selectively breed forward to reach your goals. No breeder is perfect and no line is perfect. It is absolutely impossible to guarantee SOP or show quality birds from hatching eggs or chicks. If you ever see someone advertising this saying that they have show quality hatching eggs or chicks available it is a major red flag. It is possible to acquire stock from show quality lines or breeder quality lines, but that does not guarantee that any chicks that you hatch will fit that SOP standard. However, it can provide you with the genetics that you need to get started on building a quality flock. It is crucial to ask questions when considering a breeder. Ask about their practices, their lines, some of their breeding goals, ask them about the flaws and traits they see regularly in their offspring. A good ethical breeder will have no problem answering these questions for you and discussing their birds. Good breeders, who are passionate about the birds they raise, actually quite enjoy talking about them. There is enough hate and rudeness in this world and it has no home here. We believe in kindness, understanding, empathy, and respect. Breeding should not be a competition but a collaboration amongst breeders to work together to improve the variety and breed to preserve them. I enjoy making new breeder friends. Having a knowledgeable breeder that you can talk to is not a threat to your birds or line. It’s an honor. No one will ever know everything. Together, we can share our knowledge and experiences to help build each other up and support each other‘s goals. I am always happy to share knowledge, advice, help direct someone to a breeder who is more suited for their goals even if it means it’s not me. breeding towards SOP is a never-ending journey, yet it is a very rewarding one. No matter what breeds or varieties you raise. If I had any advice, it would be choosing a breed and variety that you are truly passionate about. We should be breeding birds because it makes us happy and is fulfilling. Passionate breeders will always have better birds
